Default Spark Plug issues

Hello all, first post to the forum. I recently purchased a 2004 F-150 Ext Cab. The truck has a 5.4L Triton engine. The engine has 85K on it. My father recently told me of an issue he learned about and would like some clarification on it.

He said, that depending on when in the model year the truck was manufactured (Mine has a date code of 08/04) there could be a major issue with removing the spark plugs. Apparently these plugs could break and fall down into the cylinder head causing a very expensive repair to get the pieces out. He said there is a special tool you can buy to get the pieces out but there is no guarantee that it will work. He said it was recommended to replace the plugs between 60 and 70K miles. Since I just bought mine, I was looking at replacing plugs, hoses and belts and all the usual stuff. Before I touch the plugs, I need to know what I am looking at and what the potential for damage is. Please assist if you can.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve-

There are tons of threads for your "two piece design spark plugs" if you type in that specifically it should pull up some helpful info! Good luck man. Check them soon if they were never changed!

Here is a great video of how to remove a broken plug.
