Spark plug change poll, did you use spark plug socket
Ok I have a suspicion that people breaking plugs are not using a spark plug socket
Just to be clear, by broken I mean the piece left behind in the head in the 5.4 3v engines
Such as

So post up, and vote. Also if you used the old fuel line in the socket trick mark it as using a spark plug socket

Being that its not a standard 5/8 or 13/16 spark plug socket I am willing to bet most dont use the correct socket and end up breaking the porcelain

Besides the rubber insert why would it matter? As long you are square on the plug I wouldn't think it would matter. Will be interesting to see the results. Didn't use the plug socket and broke 2 on a motor with 59k and broke 8 on a motor with 130k. TSB followed.

The type of breakage that is prevented by using a spark plug socket isnt the kind of breakage you are talking about. A spark plug socket it meant to prevent cracking the plug that is exposed outside of the engine. I learned the hard way to use a spark plug socket when I was younger after I cracked 2 of my brand plugs on my ranger when I was installing them. When youre working in tight spaces its very easy to slip and put too much side load on the plug and break it.

BTW, Im changing the plugs on my 05 as we speak, 4 plugs down and no broken yet! knock on wood. On to the PS bank now.
