Default Spare Tire question

So I've had my 06 f150 crew can for about a year and haven't had to change a tire yet but I've been told that on fords there is a long pole that goes in a hole in the back bumper that lowers the spare so then you can take it off. I'm not sure if I have that pole. Where would it be located and what does it look like? Thanks

The long pole is just smaller poles put together. Its located by the jack under the rear seat.

You should get it out and lower the tire and spray some lube on the winch and the cable or it may end up being stuck when you need it some day

My truck never came with the spare tire kit so I bought my own scissor jack and made a 7/16 threaded rod to work instead. Cost me a fraction of the price from what the local Ford dealer wanted and no local auto recycler had this in stock.

I went to drop mine down today and I can't unlock the plug. The key doesn't seem to go all the way in and it won't turn. I put some graphite in the keyhole and sprayed the mechanism with liquid wrench and still can't get it out. Can someone tell me if the key goes all the way in theirs? I'm trying to figure out if it's the key or plug itself.

Thanks

It goes in just over half way. Your lock is seized. If pb blaster doesnt do it, remove it from the back side of the bumper.

My key went in but never turned the lock. Same with my pops 04. It sees a lot of nasty stuff from the roads and corrodes. I just bent the tabs in the back and removed the lock cylinder.

I too notice that the spare tire lock sees a lot of corrosion. I take mine out regularly and let it soak in PB Blaster for several hours. It's better than having a flat on the side of the highway without any way of changing your tire.

I've seen the spare tire kits on eBay for $40-$80 and then shipping. Not including the spare tire jack, just the rod to raise and lower the spare tire cost me less than $5 to fabricate on my own.

Take out the stupid lock and just but a bicycle lock on your spare. And I got my jack and whole spare tool set off eBay for $45 with free shipping
