Its very clearly a fuel feed issue.
No it can't, it could be grey if it was not a heavy rich, only lightly.

Regardless of what you think, each element on this earth that can burn produces a specific set of byproducts which in tern determine the colour of the smoke.

As I noted, it could be grey an it much more likely if you are certain you smell gas.

Regardless, I hope your issue is solved. I have some ideas of what could have caused this but they are all irrelevant now.

Something to consider is either hiring out this work or having someone with you far more knowledgable. Between arching the battery badly and taping into circuits that should not be, you may have dodged a bullet this time that could have been far more expensive.

Well it has stopped doing it entirely and the truck has been fine for the past day. And FWIW I wasn't the one that tapped the PCM and I wouldn't have done that. I've removed hundreds of batteries and I've never had one arc like this. I'm not sure what happened but it is what it is. The problem is gone. Hopefully it doesn't come back.

What are your ideas as to what it could have been? I just have a sinking feeling I'll see it again if it rains or something like that....

With a big enough arc there are a multitude of things that could have happened and some of them may have only been temporary.

Many of the electric components could potentially have been reset, altered or otherwise arced themselves. This includes the computer that runs your engine. This in and of itself could cause some issues until the truck runs for a while until a cycle or two has been run that resets those components or changes parameters in the computer.

Although these may not be likely they are possible.

Was the smoke temporary? By that I mean did you start it up, notice the smoke and then shut it down? Remove wires, restart and shut down again?

The arc could have caused (in theory) an injector or multiple injectors to open. This system remains under pressure even when shut down. If this happened it would take a little while of running to clear out all the extra fuel.

At this point I would not be concerned unless it happened again.
