Question Smoke and antifreeze smell from ac vents

Hi. I own a 2005 F150 XLT With the 5.4 3v 4x4 and I needed answers to my

problem. I looked and looked but couldn't find it. I was driving from work with

my ac on and all of a sudden, I began to see white smoke and the smell of

antifreeze coming from the vents. The smoke slowly exit the vents. My heater

and my cold air are working and my engine never overheated ( I was 7 miles away from home). I had the ac on cold when this happened. Please

give me solution on how to fix this. Is the heater core worn out even though

the heater works or is there a leak somewhere in the hose. The passenger

carpet is not wet. Thanks for taking your time to help me.

Also I have not lost any coolant from the reservoir.

Same thing happened to me and sad to say it was a small leak out of my heater core. Never leaked in the cab but went out very slowly behind the passenger front tire. Until one day it puked it all up on me sitting in the street.

Pretty gnarly job. Lots of labor. My windshield had a film on it and smoked out of my vents wether on hot or cold. Ac and heater still worked fine. It's an 07 4.6 regular cab 4x4.

This morning I drove 10 miles and tried to recreate the white smoke and antifreeze smell. I turns out that the smell of antifreeze and the smoke disappeared. My air ducts are covered in dust inside. Since I sometimes let the window down and have the ac on at the same time, could the dust be pushed back into the heater core causing the smoke? I tend to smell the ac freeze when the window is down while driving. Mostly on the driver side.

Ya mine did the same thing. It was off and on for a couple weeks actually and I had no idea until I went to change my radiator which had broke and I was under the truck and saw it leaking, then it all clicked. That and the weird greasy film on the windshield. It smoked off and on and leaked for a couple weeks, then exploded itself

I have smoke and strong coolant smell coming from my vents. Fogs up the windshield real quick in this 20* michigan winter. no sign of coolant loss in the reservoir and nothing on the floor. It all happened at once, no smell, no fog, then suddenly WHAM. Lucky for me I was less than a mile from home on a 150 mile round trip.

My gut says heater core, the signs say heater core. Only problem is this is the only thread I can with the same issue.

What Doug said. You can read about my issue up there ^^^. Mine did not leak in the cab though. Only outside the cab. But IMO, heater core. But maybe could also be a line going to or from it?

So did you replace your heater core? Cuz I'm having that issue and would really love to know what you did.

Just a word of caution when replacing a heater core - check to ensure it does not leak before installing. A few years ago I spent about 6 hours replacing the heater core on my 1998 Lincoln Town Car and when I refilled the radiator a large puddle formed on the passenger side floor board. The brand new (aftermarket) heater core was leaking badly. I had to do the job twice. Inspection of the new, leaking, heater core showed that some of the tubes were not welded to the water boxes and you could easily blow air into it and hear the air leaking out.
The second new (aftermarket) worked fine. I tested it before I installed it.
In my case the aftermarket heater core was purchased from AutoZone but the risk remains no matter where you buy it.
