Default Should I get a custom valve body

Before or after I get a tuner I wanted to do a custom valve body and shift kit. Thats what Im used to, but Im thinking that with these computer controlled trans the valve body and shift kit arent necessary with a tuner. So can I do both or do I only need a tuner? TIA.

You can really firm up the shifts with a tuner. I HIGHLY reccomend the SCT tuner. They raise line pressure right at the shift not the whole time the transmission is in use. This is ALOT better for the transmission. If you have the 4wr70 transmission you also want to do the J-mod to it.

OBUSNIZZLE-thanks for the kick *** link. NGM I have an 08 with the 4.6L I think I have the 4wr70 but how can I be sure? I am going to go with an SCZT tuner, I just wasn't sure if I could/should put in a custom vb for the tranny. Will the tuner, with the right tunes, hold the tranny at 2 longer before shifting to 3 and the same fro 3-4? What exactly is the J-mod? Im assuming you are referring to the link but which mod specifically? TIA

i got a shift kit in my 2000 .but have the superchip , seems to be too sloppy with out the chip on and shift pressure all the way up. i did notice the difference in power and shift timing no delay. it got rid of the slippage problem i had. seemed to use less fuel dont have to give it as much gas. it was done for $400 not sure wut year your truck is, not sure on valve bodies. i think it did something to the belts in my trany by having the super chip maxed before having the kit installed it started squeeking when shifting at high rpms. well told its either belts squeeking or injectors but was quieter after installing kit. so some say yes to shift kits some say no this is just whut i encounterd but i do have superchip brand and was told by some shops that they are notorious on killing the 2000 5.4 computers but wut do i know.wish i had SCT. not forsure if other chips need the kits?

Check on Troyer P.N. TP - 4R70VB . It's their valve body for the 4R70W, 4R70-E, and 4R75-E. They have a detailed write up on their website in the transmission section.

Cool I'll be taking that route then. They say on their site that when I order the tuner with the custom tunes they will adjust the shifts for the shift kit. Just in case anybody else was wondering. Im gonna have a sweet ride when Im all said and done, thanks to you guys.

the j-mod is a "shift kit" mod designed by the dude who invented the 4R70W

as far as i have read on other tuners, and they are all similar in the way they tune, mike is just going to reduce the amount of shift pressure he adds via tuner due to the shift kit like most would.
