Shouldn't really matter what grit you use. I think I used around 200 just so the paint would stick better. As cheap as the paint is, if you just spray them after cleaning them, touchup will be cheap. Mine has been painted six months or so and haven't had to touchup at all. Here is what I started with and after sanding.
