Default Shifter wont engage to gear

Hey all, Im new here so not sure if im doing this correctly.

I have an 04 Lariat Supercrew cab. My shifter wont engage so it is as if its on neutral the whole time. I have to position it a certain way to get it in gear. Any tips or ideas on how to fix it cheap?

-Thanks

I had this happen to a 1999 XLT, 2001 F450, 2000 XLT expedition. All had column shifters and I tightened up the Allen bolts that connect the shifter to the rest of the linkage under the dash. You have a lariat though so you probably have a pistol grip shifter in on the center console. But maybe it's the same idea? I currently drive a 2008 FX4 with the pistol grip shifter and I've seen the guts of the shifter a few times being that I'm constantly ripping apart my interior to add some toy to my truck, it's real easy. Take whatever junk you may have in your cup holders and get a good grip on the whole piece and pull it off.

Just pulls off no fasteners. Hope this helps!
