Default SCT tuner compatibility?

Im looking at buying an SCT tuner second hand. The current owner is running it on his 4.6L. Will this tuner work with my 5.4L?

Depends on what type of SCT tuner he has. Is it a SCT X3 3000 or SCT SF3 3015? Cant use his custom tunes but if it has preloaded tunes, those might work. Would need to get your own custom tunes for it.

Just check to make sure it's unlocked prior or it's a $150 unlock fee by SCT.

If it's unlocked and the SF3 3015, then you can use one of the preloaded tunes on it. Might need to update it but that's free and you can do it yourself.

Just double check it IS unlocked. Power it up, go to Device Info, scroll to bottom, and if unlocked it will say Device Unmarried. Ignore Unlocks Left 4 or 5, that means something else.

This is good info, thanks for responding. He did mention it had "4 unlocks" left. He is under the impression that if he hooks it up to his truck and returns it to stock setting, that unlocks it. Is that the case?

Correct. If he restores the stock OEM tune back to the truck, that unlocks it and will burn one unlock left. SCT tuners come with a max of 5 unlocks so can be used on up to 5 vehicles total max but only one at a time. That's what the unlocks left 4 means.

Got it! Thanks! What is the one canned tune I would be able to use? I do plan on getting custom tunes either way.

Send the tuner to Sct and pay a $65 fee to get 5 more unlocks added when you run out.
