Default School me on VCTs

So I have been seeing a lot of threads about vct solenoid replacement. I guess I don't really know what they do. Is this another part on my 5.4l that I should be thinking about replacing with the updated version, or do I just leave them alone?

Leave them alone unless you are actually having an issue they are very simple to replace on the 04-06 5.4 motors just pop off the cap and unscrew them. 07+ motors you have to remove the valve cover.

On the early motors you will also have to replace the seal. They are around $13.

Unless you can get them off carefully with minimal damage. I tried and lost patience and wound up tearing them off lol
