Safest way to clean the engine bay area

The engine in my '04 looks like new. I hose the dust off every other wash or so. with a spray nozzle, never a power washer. I'll drive the truck for at least 15 minutes immediately afterwards...I figure it's good to cook off water where it's not necessarily supposed to be. I've never had a problem, and I blast everything. I think everything in there is at least water resistant.
Sounds like you have a mess to clean up...scrape off any thick stuff that you can and use Gunk for the heavy oil bits. Just don't spray anything "important" looking like wire connectors or the cops with that stuff...and try to keep it away from the belts. Rinse everything off real good...then take it for a drive.
Back in the day, all you had to do was cover the distributor cap and coil and blast away with a fire hose. Those old engines leaked oil everywhere and the Gunk degreaser did a fine job. Buy rubber gloves and a dustmask when spraying it...it's quite nasty. Once the engine is clean it's easy to keep it that way...as long as it's not spewing oil.
Change the plugs, man...it makes a big difference.
