i just bought a super clean '06 from missouri, and living in wisconsin was thinking about getting it rust proofed. anyone have any opinions or had this done? wondering if it's worth it.

I have no experience with this specific to F150 trucks, but having spent 20 years in upstate NY, I thought that rust proofing when the way of the GiaPet. I believe that car manufacturers build their cars now to withstand tough conditions (unlike the pre-90s), and rustproofing does more harm than good, by blocking the car's ability to drain and trapping contaminants against the body.

well i don't know about new york, but they definetly still do it around here. never had it done before so i'm not sure if it's worth it. with as much salt as they use up here i guess i couldn't hurt.

Ilive in atlantic canada, we have lots of salt in the air and on the roads. I rust checked my last ford every other year and hardly had any rust at all when i got rid of it after 6 years. my new ford is 4 years old and i never did anything to it and have major rust on the frame and minor rust on the boady.The bumpers are a lost cause. Just make sure you dont undercoat the truck, this will just trap moisture aginst the metal. get it sprayed with a good rust inhibitor like rust check or crown and you wont regret it. I am getting rid of my truck now and will rustcheck the next one every year for sure. not sure about where you are but around here u can get a truck coated for about $120.

The only problem there is with undercoating/rustproofing is that people do it wrong! There is a significant amount of prep involved, not just simply spraying the coating all over the place. You have to clean the areas thoroughly, mask off any wiring or tubing and cover any drain holes. All exposed areas have to be sanded down. It's very labour intensive, and a real undercoating job costs quite a bit if money, especially the high quality lifetime warranty jobs. It definitely doesn't hurt. Another important thing is to wash the road salt off your vehicle weekly when you get to the winter months, and wash it thoroughly.

Best way to prevent rust? Dont drive it in the winter, get a beater vehicle. All it takes is one exposure. Most modern manufacturers dont have any factory rust protection, heck they dont want them to last long.

Your right if u undercoat a vehicle it takes a lot of prep. But this is something different. Rust check is a thin wax based rustinhibitor that displaces moisture and protected the metal. At most places that apply it they will spray it up into the drain holes coating between body panels as well, it won't plug these holes. Undercoating is the thick black stuff that covers everything and looks great or about a year, I would stay away from that.

For some of us, having a winter beater is not an option. Also, many of us use our trucks for work, and we all have to work year round, right? As far as modern manufacturers not having factory rust protection, I'd have to disagree with that. Look on any manufacturer website and you'll see they have a corrosion warranty of around 5-10 years.

I am familiar with Rust Check as I've used it before. I've also used undercoating as well. I have lived coast to coast and there are areas where you must have some sort of corrosion protection otherwise your vehicle will go to crap within a couple of years. I have used both undercoating and rust inhibitor, and as mentioned if used correctly you won't have any issues.

I live in the salt and rust belt capital of Canada and I have always gotton my cars and trucks oil sprayed every fall and in over 23 years and 30 vehicals later never had a rust issue!! Oil spraying dosnt clog anything,its thin and gets into every nook and cranny,every weld etc etc,a good company like Krown or Rust Check spray it in between the panals too.They have to drill small holes but if they dont drill and it isnt leaking,its not doing anything.
