Runs rough and sounds like diesel
I have an 05 f150 lariat with a 5.4 triton recently is started running really rough and sounds like a diesel at idle, I know it has to do with either the phaser or the solenoid but is there a way to figure out which of them has actually gone bad

It doesn't really matter. If one went, the other is right behind it, as are other parts. Change it all.
