Running different gear ratios on 4x4

Only the front axles, gears and driveshaft would be turning but would not be connected inside the transfercase. Essentailly everything is spinning but no cennection is made to the driven side of the drivetrain.

Ok, that makes sense. So to disable the 4x4 selector, is this as simple as pulling a fuse, or is it more involved?

You will be fine. When I lifted my 03 I brought the front end to the gear installer. He installed it and I came home and finished the rest of my install. Then drove the truck to the gear installer again and he did the rear. The reason for this is that basically the complete front end needs to come part to do gears in the front.
But let's be real, with the 200K miles I have put on past 4X4s I never accidentally turned it on. Just do the rear now and front when you can. Just don't flip the switch.
