Exhaust will not cause it to run lean, a CAI will. Ive had true duals on mine for 70,000 miles with no issues.
Not completely true; perhaps it depends on the engine and it's management software loaded in the PCM. Changing the exhaust will in most cases allow the enging to expell exhaust more easily, and the PCM see's this via the inputs of the inboard and outboard O2 sensor signals. It then compensates by providing a mixture (more rich) if required. Most "brain boxes" can compensate for mild upgrades, such as an exhaust OR CIA, but perhaps not both at the same time. However, I have both of these modifications installed on my 2005 4.2 V6, and I do not have any symptoms of a lean mixture. I've driven over 6K miles since these upgrades, both "intown" and "long distance" (Dallas Texas to Orlando Florida). I have not installed a tuner to date, but plan to in the near future to gain additional benefits of the upgrades.
I've also removed a plug from each side; the plugs show a good burn within the cylinder.
