Default rpm falls off when holding accelerator down

as the title says:
my rpm goes up with gas pedal depressed (in Neutral) but will not hold steady with pedal held steady. Usually falls off about 200 rpm.

Any ideas?

Might be a Vacuum leak somewhere... Does the truck run good otherwise?

Yes seems fine otherwise.
Just as an example: In neutral, foot on brake, increase rpm to 1,000 and hold gas pedal steady, then rpm falls back to 800+/- while holding pedal steady, etc

It's the Rev limiter so you don't blow your motor.

The rev limiter isn't going to kick in at 1000 rpm.
