I thought I seen somewhere that the 4.6l didn't have vct solenoids? I may be wrong though, have looked at LOTS of info dealing with this.

I seen that a catalytic converter just starting to go could cause it?

I am not quite ready to put an exhaust on yet!

If a cats plugged/clogged. A tell-tale sign will be glowing red after its been running for a while

First, I would change your Coils and Plugs. You can never be to sure.

Next, clean your throttle body and MAF sensor.

Another thing is to change your PCV valve. That helped a lot for me too!

I have done spark plugs, coils, throttle body (which cures the shutting off when coming to a stop), cleaned the maf sensor, 1 upstream o2 sensor, & fpdm.

OK...what about the other 2 things?

Clean the actual throttle body and change your PCV valve

I have cleaned the butterfly on the throttle body, the pcv I have not done. That's a nice inexpensive part to try.
