Default Replacing rear pinion seal

The service manual says I need to remove the rear brake disc in order to replace the pinion seal between the driveshaft and differential. Whats the theory behind that? Is that one of those things the service manual says to do but isnt really necessary?

Sounds like a mistake to me. I didn't do that when I replaced my pinion seal.
