Hi, some people are saying the 5.4s do have lifters... some don't. anyways, i think its best when i have time, to send the truck down for a better diagnose and see what is really wrong before i start assuming the wrong. might have to suck up with the costs but well, better than doing something wrong and end up costing more. and i am not good in diagnosing what's wrong or right, as i don't have mechanical experience or a mechanic friend. : ( will update when i get a chance.

Well I can tell you for sure they do not have liters. I have built countless mod motors. Most of the time the ticking noise comes from the objectors or the chain tentioners.

Oh ok then, i think it is my lash adjusters that are making most of the noises. But i may be wrong, i assumed them because i watched the video from:
http://www.flatratetech.com/index.php -->5.4 VCT Theory & Operation

But there are a couple of noises associated with the noise, so i may be wrong.. the sounds come from both left and right. On cold start up, there is a slight high clicking and then it goes away after 10 mins. On engine warmup, the clicking noise from engine, more like a 'cluck cluck cluck' heavy noise starts when engine is warm and is continuous and consistent throughout. When i rev engine by just a bit, the noise goes away but then returns when i release gas pedal. The video uses a microphone at 2" away from sound source, but my sound could be heard with hood closed, and about 5 meters away from my truck. Also quite loud when windows are closed and no radio on.

Totally reawakening this thread because I ran across it. Most of the time, the knock from the fender wells is the phasers. But here's the thing. I had to replace mine do to a sparkplug screw up from my ex-mechanic. Ford dealership replaced them about 6 months ago. I just put on my new exhaust which included long tube headers, and know I got that imfamous knock back. It's driver's side, on the side of the head. Injectors kinda sound like my parents' weiner dog running on a tile floor, a real distinct, but uniform, clicking. This knock, is slightly off from the increase and decrease rpm of the motor. Its a very slight difference, but a difference none the less. If my phaser is going out again, I'm gonna go ape.
