That motor sounds clean to me. Good job!

What were your symptoms and sounds prior to the overhaul?
Did you install dorman phasers?

The VCT solenoids are revised with check valves on the body and a smaller orifice (bypass drain) at the bottom. They boost pressure to the phaser and help with phaser stability. I'd install the new ones no matter what.... I would switch the solenoids out with each other to see if the over retard code moves to the other bank..

thanks for the reply, she does sound good. I am going to swap them around an see if the code follows. There is a video I posted in a thread here with the before sound, "cam phaser replacements blowing motors", definite difference in engine sound. I did read that I should have dipped the VCT Solenoids in oil prior to install, I did not know that and will ensure that I do today during inspection. I want to change them too, just gotta wait for some spending cash. I will post updates later today.

The parts were all Ford OEM by the way. Symptoms before was just the standard noise, still ran great.

Another update, pulled the left valve cover off to change the gasket, all three parts stores near me plus the dealership did not have the gasket, had to reuse the one I had on there. It had a small tear near where it had been leaking, not all the way separated but when I pulled the cover off, the back end of the gasket had rolled off the cover anyways. Put cover back on, changed the VCTs from right side to left side, cleaned them first and dipped them in clean oil before installation. Put everything back together again and started her up. She idled in my driveway for just over an hour while I was watching for any oil leak, didn't see any thank god. Went back and forth from drive to reverse to check the idle, it dropped down to about 450 but never stalled. After over an hour of idling and no check engine light, I shut her off. Took a break for a while, about an hour later, went out for test drive, before I got out of the driveway, check engine light. Scanned, P0012 again. Cleared code with pocket scanner, went for a 20 mile drive and no code, stalled one time a block from my house and started right up and ran great. Even though I unhooked the battery, could the pcm have retained the code? I didn't think to turn headlights on with battery disconnected to drain any residual power. Is 20 miles not enough of a test drive or do I have to start the engine a few times to get a good cycle for codes? Any advice would be great. Thank you

two more test drives down, 2nd was only about 15 miles, ran great, no error codes. 3rd was about 35 miles, no codes this time either. Gonna try to drive a bunch again tomorrow for more test runs and will post either successful or error codes if they pop up. Thanks all for your help.

Hopefully you got it man. Maybe there was an air bubble in the VCT that was preventing it from operating properly, or it wasn't seated correctly the first time. Whenever I change my oil, and when I replaced my timing system, I held the throttle open(which disengages the fuel injectors) and turned the motor over for a few seconds, a few different times. That allows the oil pressure to build up slowly without the motor actually running. My truck idles around 500, so 450 doesn't sound too bad. If you don't get any more codes, and it runs good, you should be fine.

So far, so good. Had a lot of running around to do today so it has been a lot of stop here, shut truck off, leave here, start truck and with the multiple trips, still no error codes. As always, thanks to all with the helpful advice. Gonna let this thread go now. Anything ever pops up, I will start a new thread. Gonna post everything I learned in the Final Repair Guide for the phaser tick thread to pass on some of this info that I have learned.
