I assume that you might find one at a junk yard or maybe someone who did not get a factory tow package would trade their plain old bumper for your hitch/bumper combo.
Thats very interesting. I have never seen nor heard of anything like that. So, when i went to the dealership to buy my ford and they had them lined up side by side in different colors, some with hitches and some without, and he told me that he could remove one if i didnt want it or add one to a model that didnt come with one, he was lying? I certainly wouldnt buy any truck that the hitch was contected to the bumper and not the frame. The bumpers they put on trucks today, cant take near the loads that a hitch can thats connected to the frame. Thats the whole reason we used hitches today instead of putting the ball on the bumper

is you look at some hitches you can see that they are mounted to the frame and they have two bolts that go from the hitch to the bumper as well.

this might be what he is talking abougt

My point exactly, if it has a couple of bolts going through the bumper, you should still be able to unbolt the hitch from the bumper with out having to buy a whole new bumper to have a no-hitch setup.

No guys, as I understand it, the hitch is attached to the frame and the bumper is attached to the hitch. The hitch and bumper are an assembly and if you take off that hitch the bumper is coming with it (if it is a 2008 factory tow package hitch on a Supercrew like mine). You can certainly then detach the bumper from the hitch, but you cannot reattach the bumper to the truck (at least without buying some new parts).

You can buy aftermarket hitches - if that is what the dealer was offering.

You can take off the bumper/hitch from one truck and swap it for a plain old bumper on another - if that is what he was saying.

But I am 99.98% sure that you cannot take off a factory tow package hitch and install it directly onto a truck that came without a factory tow package while keeping its bumper as originally attached.

There have been a couple of threads about this on this forum in the last 4 months since I bought my truck.
