Question Removing stuck stud from exh mani

2005 5.4 XLT 4x4 114,000mi.
Hello, hello! I am trying to remove a stud from my right exhaust manifold so that I may place my new cat. converter up to the exhaust mani. correctly. The only thing is that the stud does not want to come out. No matter what.
I heard you can freeze a stud and warm the outside of the manifold and possibly break it free that way, but any suggestions would be cool.

Right now I am dealing with a converter that is not all the way pressed up against the manifold so I am getting exhaust leak and a lot of noise.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all!

Well those studs are made to take the heat and cool back down pretty well. You are going to have to heat it up a lot to break it. Worse case is you cut the stud and weld or bolt in a new one.

Ok,,,, I have an Old Skool trick I learned from an old mechanic.. he was in his 70's and knew what he was doing,

To get broken studs out of manifolds. he would heat it up with a torch and when its all red hot he would touch it with a peice of bees wax. then let it cool..

Once cool you could grab the stud with some vice grips and it would come right out.. easy..

I have done this a lot and it works great.

The cheapest way to buy bees wax is to buy a toilet bowl ring.. the seal for the floor.. get it from Home Depot..

I agree Nobman, that works good. I've used just a regular ole candle before and it worked good too.

I use a product called Areo croil, "the oil that creeps". It comes in an aerosol spray can that is about 10 oz. It is pricey. Last can I bought was almost $11.00, but the stuff is fantastic. I have yet to see an application where it failed. I have used it in automotive, marine and plumbing situations where nothing else worked. You just spray it on and let it sit overnight, if possible.

You'll have to call around to find it because few people sell it. Due to its price, I suspect.
