I want to remove this chrom shifter tirm to paint it. I know how to remove the cup holder and I was able to free the chrome shifter trim, but I cannot get it around the shifter because it's to big.. Can this be done.. How difficult is it???

the cupholder just snaps into place, the chrome ring should have some tabs holding it inplace over a locating pin.

I got it free from the tabs but it won't fit around the shifter so that I can take it out and paint it.
