Remote start suggestions?
I know nothing about them and from what I have read, I should have an expert install it. One question I have, Can I get a Ford remote start installed and would that be cheaper than aftermarket? I can do some electrical work myself, but figured I would have the Pro's do it so nothing gets messed up. I just never knew it would be such an expensive add on for the truck!!!! I went to Best Buy tonight, and they said a remote start only is $350 and alarms go up another $1-200 on top of that. WOW. I went to an audio place after that and they quoted me $250 for the basic remote start. I don't want anything fancy, just a way to warm up the truck. I also don't want 2 key FOB's on my keychain.
Any suggestions? What brand do you have and how much did it cost altogether? Or if you installed it---How hard was it to do??
thanks,
dave

Lol 350 is dirt cheap. Last alarm I had installed ran me $1100. Top of the line though, Clifford G5 system with intellistart and smart windows plus bypass modules installed on my 96 Cobra.
ETA == I plan to install a Viper remote start on my 07 F150 myself though.

lol first off never have best buy install anything electrical. plenty of horror stories out there. i would go to an audio/remote start store or have an electrical specialist do it.
i have heard ford remote starters arent as good as aftermarket and im sure theyre over priced.
installing a remote start yourself is not an easy task but at the same time it isnt hard if you have electrical knowledge and the proper tools.
i installed a python responder 1 remote start in my girlfriends 02 mustang GT as well as in my uncles 08 F250. the responder 1 system is pretty frickin good, i think atleast. it was under $100 and its made by a reputable company. bought it from amazon.com
when installing a remote starter yourself the most important thing is making sure you have the proper wires located and tested to make sure they are either putting out voltage or have no voltage depending on the wire and the position of the key, you will also need a transponder kit to bypass the PATS. they are faily cheap, like $30. Xpresskit is the only company i would trust, again they are a reputable company.

DO NOT go by color alone, always test the wires to assure proper readings otherwise you will **** something up.
word of caution, normally when you purchase a remote start as a DIY project you will not be able to get customer support for the product. they only offer support to licensed installers. HOWEVER bull dog security offers DIY customer service for their systems. i have no clue how good they are since i have never used them.

I have a viper 5900 on my truck with remote start. The alarm system is great and the remote start works great. It also has a lot of nice features including valet mode and a few other things. I payed $550 for it installed by a local stereo shop. It is really nice and has up to a 1 mile range. The key fob for the system also controls the factory door locks, so there's only need for the viper key fob and you can ditch the stocker.

Thanks everyone for the input. I was wondering if the Ford product was the way to go. I have 2 more shops in the local area that do this kind of work, and I was planning on calling tomorrow. A project like this kinda scares me b/c I don't want to F*** my truck up, plus I don't want the product to go belly up after a years worth of use. As for a reputable shop, I always wonder what kind of quality work I'm going to get. I always walk into the store and there are some punk 19 year olds working behind the counter that Know it all, and have done it all!!!
I was blown away by the $250-350 estimate just for a remote start (not including an alarm). But after reading here, I guess that's not as bad as I thought.

A dumb question, but is there a time limit on warming up the truck when using a remote start??? I mean, if I start the truck and then for some dumb reason I forget its running, will it turn itself off after a certain amount of time??? Or does it run until out of gas? I've always wondered this especially with the remotes that can start it a mile away. Is it possible to accidentally start it by having the key FOB in your pocket?
