Rear Pinion and Bearing cost
I have a howl at about 50 - 55mph, which goes away if i let go of the gas, or speed up beyond 55. I just got a quote from Ford they want about 700 bucks for parts, and another 800 for labor. Does this seem steep ?

Depends on what parts they are saying you need.
I just priced it up real quick
FRPP 3.73 gear set
Trac Loc rebuild kit
gear install kit
pinion bearing set
Total $411.00
Only thing else you would need is fluid so based on that I would say $700 for parts is pretty high. Install is kind of steep too.
I blew out the 4.30s in my rear end and when I say blew out I mean teeth on the ring gear went through the rear cover. I got all new gears, bearings, rebuilt the diff while I had it open and a guy charged me about $250 to put it all back together.

$1500 to rebuild a diff???? A second quote is definitely warranted there. If all you need is a seal and a set of bearings, that wouldn't set you back much. Now you do need to pull out your spider gear set to pull the pinion out which is a little work, but not $800 worth. If you get another quote, let us know what it is. Good luck.
