Rear end was smoking need help
Okay, long story.
I had a leaking pinion seal on my 2006 fx4 (100,000 miles). I took it into the dealership and they replaced the seal and topped off the fluid. No big deal, cost me 100 bucks. They also did a multi point inspection and found no other problems. While I was waiting for my old truck to be fixed I made a deal on a 2012 fx4 with a 5.0L. I'm picking the new truck up next weekend.
Now on to the problem. I drove the truck about a hundred miles this morning to meet a business associate, when I got to his house there was smoke pouring out of passengers rear wheelwell. I made three stops on the way to his house and never noticed any smoke or a burning smell.
I'm in a jam because I have to drive the truck and get it back home (another 90 miles) and then to the dealership to trade in for the 2012 but I'm afraid to drive the truck and damage it. Then I'll be stuck with a broke down truck with small trade in value.
I never had any issues before I dropped the truck off. It has to either be a seized caliper or bad rear wheel bearing. I didn't see any differential fluid leaking from the pumpkin or tube ends. I just can't believe this conveniently happened right before I'm going to trade the truck in. What should I do? I'll be out of town and won't get a chance to work on it this week and I have to get it to the dealership by next Saturday. Need some advice. Thanks in advance.

Drive it several miles and see where it gets hot.
If no heat within several miles go further.
Just depending on what it was, it may or may not repeat.
Need to find out where the issue is.
If it was smoking I would expect a visual observation to show where the heat was concentrated via burned paint, grease or dirt.
If a bearing - there should be a grinding/grumbling noise. If a caliper - should be a dragging noise.
May be able to get back home by going in short trips and then short stops to cool down.

My experience with bad bearings has been noise long before any heat.
I believe you had a stuck caliper. If so, you should be able to see some signs of heat.
Good luck

Haven't noticed any grinding or typical bad bearing noises. I'm leaning more towards a stuck caliper. Hopefully it remedies itself quickly.
