I guess the proper nomenclature would be the differential case bearing. It is the bearing that that supports the differential assembly, not the diveshaft carrier bearing. Sorry 'bout that.

No need to be sorry. I haven't ordered any parts for anything yet. That helps out a lot.

Thank you,

Ken

A little back story. Had a 'rumble' that was hard to locate. At first I suspected the driveshaft carrier bearing, (yes, a two piece driveshaft). Then I suspected the pinion bearing. Pulled the dif cover and had shiny flacks in the oil, thought it looked like 'bearing chrome'. Buttoned it up and ordered a rebuild kit. Later when the time was available, I started to disassemble the rear end. When I pulled the diff, the bad bearing was obvious. The pinion felt great so I left it alone. New diff case bearings and all is well!

How much time did it take you to replace? I've never done it so I'm curious. Was it complicated or was it like changing any other part?

Thank you,

Ken

Not hard at all. The tough part is removing and replacing the bearing, might want to take the assembly to a machine shop. I used a torch to heat the bearing races to get them free, then used the old bearing race and a press to seat the new bearing races.

I eliminated my tires by jacking up the rear end and putting it in drive. I recorded the sound with my phone but don't know if it's ok to add it in this post. I don't think it's coming from the trans as I moved down to that area and didn't hear it. It's like it's either from the rear end or wheel. Like I mentioned earlier, these are new bearings and seals with friction modifier added.

Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Ken
Did you ever figure this out? I have been hearing something similar on my truck for a while now....
