couple mo old thread, but wanted to jump in quick.

I just changed the oil in my rear end and bought the same valvoline full synthetic 75w-140 oil. According to the data sheet for that product (taken from valvoline home page):

Valvoline SynPower Gear Oil is recommended for use in axle applications requiring factory-fill or drain-and-fill levels of limited slip performance. Valvoline SynPower 75W-140 is also recommended for use where Ford M2C-192A, GM 12346140, Chrysler MS-8985 , or GL-5 SAE 75W-140 gear oil is specified. The addition of a supplemental friction modifier(Ford M2C-118-A, Chrysler MS-5630, or GM 1052358) is not required.

(emphasis copied from data sheet)

So I'm just not sure what to do... seems the common opinion is to add the ford friction modifier. You mentioned add 4oz to bring this oil up to ford spec... were they talking the full synthetic?

not sure how to answer your question other than say to you...

if you change the diff oil AND plan on putting in a friction modifier, when you get the rear diff plate on, make sure you ADD THE MODIFIER FIRST... then top up with your diff oil.

I used royal purple full synthetic and still used 4 oz of the 7 oz tube of friction modifier i bought. I have a limited slip, and i was told to start with 4 oz and add more if it made any noise or vibrations. So far so good! I also bent my cover trying to get it off, used a hammer to bend it back.

I worked at a Valvoline oil change center, and anytime we did a diff service that called for friction mod, we added it to the diff even though the gear oil says it has additives.

Yes when I talked to him we were talking about the full synthetic. It's been a while since I did that and I still don't have any chattering.

Thanks for the thoughts. I'm going w/ the consensus and went ahead and added the friction modifier from Ford.

No leaks and no chattering so I'm calling it good for another 80K.
