rear end locked up!!!!!
I have a 2005 ford F150 stx. My truck started making a loud clunking like noise and I would feel the rear end dragging like it wanted to lock up on me. I turned around since I was close to home. Right before I made it back to the house it made a really loud noise and the rear end locked up all together. I tried putting it in 4x4 hi and low and the truck wouldn't move on rev up and whine. I put it in neutral and it rolled backwards with ease but wouldn't seem to go into gear. It appears the was a leak at the rear axle seal. If the rear axle seal was leaking bad enough could this cause the rear end to lock up and what could I possibly be looking at? I'm not very knowledgeable in this area what so ever.

Sounds to me that all the oil drained out and caused the rearend to overheat and lock up. Hate to be the one to tell you but if this is the case your going to need a complete replacement of gears and bearings. With labor this could be a job that could cost you north of $1,000 to fit. Who be a good idea to change the gears to a different ratio if you have larger than stock tires installed. If the truck is 4X4 then the front gears would also need to be changed.

I would unhook the driveshaft, and see if it moves. Just to make sure it isnt something else further up the driveline. Then i would pick up a rearen from the junkyard, and just swap the whole thing in.
