Default Rear Differential Cover and fluid change

I need to replace my rear seal as its starting to leak slowly. Im going to get a mag-hytec cover (unless someone has a better option). But I have a few questions. When ordering a cover, most places have a 9.75 long and a 9.75 short. How do I know which one I have?

Next, what is the prefered gear oil to run in it. It takes 5 quarts of whatever oil im supposed to have. Royal purple? Does it make a difference?

I've got the small 8.8 so not sure if long or short is what you need. As far as gear oil goes, I would use what is suggested by your gears manufacturer (i assume you have regeared). I run Royal Purple 75w-90 and have since I did the first change 60k ago, never with a problem.

Make sure you get the LS additive if you need it.

The 75w-90 is supposed to be replaced with 75w-140 and yes you need a friction modifier if LS.. Royal Purple is good stuff but way overpriced IMO. When I did mine i used valvoline synthetic 75w-140 and it feels great, not to mention it was 11.99q compared to 18.99q for royal purple.. I also bought a gasket which was way quicker and easy to install instead of the RTV..
