Rear differential change, non-limited slip to limited slip
Ok. Totaled out my 2003 FX4 with a limited slip rear end a month ago, so I bought my dad's 2004 4x4 Lariat, but it needs some work, (shocks, ex. manifold, tires, etc. which I am working on now.
I also realized it has the 3.73 non-limited slip rear end in it (usually an f-250 rear end), and am not excited about 2 wheel drive traction in the winter. Has anyone changed out their rear end to a LS rear end? And how hard is it? Did a little quick research, and it looks like you can get an Auburn LS diff for roughly $500, but I'm wondering if I do some junkyard searching for a LS 3.73. OR does it even matter what the gear ratio is from the junkyard...cause I suppose I could just swap the gear with the one I already have? What do I need to look for from a junkyard?
Or is it easier to just buy a whole rear end from a salvage yard? I know I would have to stay with a 3.73 because that is what the front end would be, right?
Or should I not even bother...

Just remember..whatever gear you end up with in the rear needs to match the front diff. (4X4)

Thought about doing it on mine, but it would be kinda useless for me.
I don't drive much in winter.
When I lived in downtown montreal for a winter, I had no problem getting out of snow bank. shovel a bit and it was out....Just don't think you drive a 4x4 and you'll be good in 2wd..even with a non-ls,
LS can thend to slip more sideways then a non-ls (My 2wd LS ranger did that a lot compare to my 2wd non-ls f150.

Limited slip would require a full rear end set and the cost with that.
I would use something like this http://www.powertrax.com/ No gear set up is require you just place the spider gears
