Rear Differential... bites the dust!
Has anyone had problems with the rear differential?
I have an 05 4x4 and the rear diff just went, how much is too much for a rebuild , how much is a new rear end, and at what point do you stop the bleeding of money and cut your losses?

Find a good mechanic, I used diffs.from junk yards before, with my mechanics blessing. He just installed new bearings and cleaned the gears and filled it up with lube. It cost $1200.00 for my last vehicle. It ran like a charm for another 75,000 miles before I retired it.

when my 04 was new the rear diff went... I want to say it was around the 60k mile mark. I asked the mechanic if it was an issue with the limited slip, and even though I have the window sticker and allllll the paper work saying I paid for it, it was never on the truck BUT the good news was after arguing with my dealer for a few days they agreed to cover the repairs. Ill see if I can look up the original bill before the warranty picked it up.

I have 04 and it has 65k miles and it looks like my rear end has had something done to it because I can see RTV around the cover that is not stock. I don't think a rear-end is enough to get rid of a truck.
Every situation is different.

Could be they changed the gears, like I have. Went from 3.73 LS to 4.10 posi. Gas mileage is over-rated.....................
Of course they could have went the other way, and went with shorter gears for better gas mileage.......

I have an 05 4x4 screw and at 50,000 the rear end was acting up so I had the fluid replaced and modifier added. It did the trick, it seems that the original fluid doesn't play well with the slipper clutch's and causes things to bind up. All the folks I have talked with say the modifier is needed. It sounds like I might be to late for you on this but maybe someone else out there can use. Good luck!

It really depends on what broke. If you broke a ring gear or pinion gear, the gear set is a couple hundred, and you're probably looking at a $700 + bill. That will need to be done professionally.
If that's OK, and the spider gears or something went, I'd spend $500 and get a Detroit True trac (major upgrade), and install it myself. The Ford rear ends are easy to do, and only require dial indicator ($25) and torque wrench. Just swap the ring gear over to the new carrier, put the proper shims in. (there's a little more to it than that, but its easy). You don't need to touch the pinion gear preload or depth if you're re-using the gear set.
I did my first one 2 years ago, and 45,000 miles and alot of towing later still works great. The tech guys at Randy's Ring & Pinion talked me through the whole thing. They're awesome.
