6-7 hours sounds like they are charging you to setup the ring and pinion. What they should be charging you for is to R&R the carrier and carrier bearings.

I have 3.55 LS front and rear on my 1989 F150 4x4. Never had an issue on snow or ice.

A honest mechanic actually charges you for the time they work on you vehicle. Not how much can we take off this guy. So I could also go on and on if you would like.

No I'm not a mechanic nor do I own a shop. I'm a 26yr old punk who learned how to do **** on my own. Sure I knew some people that knew what they were doing and I've done my fair share. If you think your getting ripped that bad learn how to DIY and quitcherbitchin. And I think paying a shop for 7 hrs would be a good deal. If they put it in they should warranty the work and if your gearset blows up it's on them. You want to pay for 3hrs that will save you what, $250 at most. Thats much cheaper then new gears. You get what you pay for man. I know you want to find the best deal but bitchin to us doesn't do it. Ask around your town or like I said, go learn a thing or two.

I originally had 4.10s put in my 08 4.2L 5-speed, but I didn't like them at all. They didn't make nearly as noticable of a difference as I had expected, and absolutely killed my mileage. I was getting barely over 14 mpg on the highway. So, I had 3.55s installed and I really like them; a bit more kick, and I'm back to 17.5 mpg mixed driving, over 18 all highway.

In most cases I would agree with that but not this case. What you are paying for when you go to a shop is time, which has nothing to do with service, especially when you are talking flat rate time. Its just as easy for someone who is incompetent to take an entire day to do a job as it is for them to take 2 hours to do it, actually easier. Most places will charge flat rate. Ask to look at their flat rate for differential replacement, not ring and pinion replacement. I still think 7 hours is too much time for a simple differential replacement. They get by with that crap because most people dont even want to know about ring and pinions, they just open their wallet and pay for the magic to happen.

3.55s seem to be decent gears for 6cyl engines...

I know my powerband is totally accessible from standard driving RPMs and I like that. Better than how open 3.55s were with my friend who has a 95 351, its took forever for the power to hit... it was almost like Turbo lag. 4.10s are more suited to V8s...

(I have a 300 I6 / M5OD)
