Rattle upon acceleration

I know this is an older thread but wanted to leave a quick comment, I too had the same noise and replaced the solenoid which worked the first time, about a year after that I started getting the noise again, I again replaced the solenoid which did not correct the problem this time around, I started with the vacuum lines tracing from the actuators to the solenoid, I actually found a pinhole in the line right about at the top of the passengers side tire which was due to the plastic harness had worn out and the vacuum line rubbing on the fender-skirt, Im talking a very small hole, it was luck that I actually even found it. I cut out the pinhole from the vacuum line, found some replacement tubing at the local Ace Hardware store and all is back to normal.
Just my two cents, hope I am able to help someone.

I have the same problem with my 04 FX4 screw. It is really noticeable when it gets under load, like on a hill or when the rpms start dropping before it downshifts into another gear. I had just had the spark plugs changed. Pretty sure it is spark knock because it wasn't doing it before i had them changed.
I had the issue with a clacking/rattling/ticking/rattle sound in the engine compartment on a 2000 E150 5.4L Triton (205,000 mi.) Basically, what was actually spark knock on acceleration. It also likely lead to our poor LTFT and STFT readings.
I could rev engine in park/neutral as high as I wanted and would NEVER get the noise. That fact, and, that no codes were being thrown made this next to impossible to find the origin/reason. We tried all kinds of repairs/fuel treatments/octane increase/MAF sensor cleaning, etc..., based on whatever I found from endless forum searches. Nothing worked. But, now finally it is fixed. The DPFE ports were caked/occluded with carbon and when we just touched the hoses, they also just crumbled. The problem existed for almost 3 yrs. It's now FIXED.
Also, Ford had bad DPFE's early on and this was a big deal for performance issues. I did not actually need to replace it however as it just needed cleaning, and I suspect it is/was not the original anyway.

Bad Actuators
I used this forum to diagnose my 2008 Ford F-150 which was making a rattling noise upon acceleration. Thank you!!
I first started by checking any loose heat shield, but the noise didn't go away. The way I diagnosed it without many tools involved was by engaging my 4x4 and the noise would go away. Thinking the actuators were working if I could engage 4x4, I replaced the hub locking solenoid, but no luck. It was the passenger side actuator. I let the noise go for alittle too long because it ended up damaging the hub assembly. The actuator on the passenger side was the bad one, but I ended up replacing both the passenger and driver side because they were both original to the truck with 195k miles. However, I made the mistake of not changing the hub assembly on the driver side with the new actuator, and the actuator ended up going bad after just a couple weeks because the hub and actuator didn't fit tightly together due to natural wear on the old hub. I hope this helps the next poor sucker with a rattle on their F-150! Have fun!

Ratlling noise
ya but once you get to speed young cant hear them due to wind/engine noise.
also i hear mine mainly when i go through a drive through. the reverb off the building makes it loud as hell lol. i have the updated phasers and it still does it though, nowhere near as bad as before though. i just call it the "triton tick" lol.
if your truck hasnt had em done, should be first on your list to do before you have a dealer or someone start rippin up your motor to try to find it.
put it in park and open the hood and see if you hear anything from around the valve covers like XLT Billy said to do. if you do, then my bet is on your cam phasers.
