Rattle upon acceleration
#51
Took it to the dealership. They said it was a rock in my cat shield. So they did charge me anything and I went home to fix it. Found to rocks and a piece of old clamp. After getting back on the road, I still have the noise. I'll be taking it back soon for further evaluation.

Finally found the problem! It wasn't until I went to the dealership and asked to look at my truck under the hoist. I was happy that they let me. It only took 30 seconds to locate the problem from my new view. The metal shield in the middle of our trucks was bent up slightly, just enough to make contact with the exhaust pipe. A little hammering later and it no longer is a problem. I hope this advice can help a few of you. Getting under the truck with just a dolly hid it from me. Check yours out and let me know how you fair.

I had the same problem with my 2004 Ford F-150 Supercrew FX4. Only when I would accelerate, a rattling noise would drive me crazy from under the passenger side seat area.
My Dad fixed this problem for me. He's the pro so forgive my if my terms are not exactly correct. I've include a photo and explanation of how to diagnosis if this is your 4x4 actuators / (iwe's).
My Dad told me to unplug the "vacuum solenoid", which is used to control the locking in of your 4x4. I unplugged this, and my rattling noise that would happen when I accelerated was now gone. Unplugging that makes the truck not try to lock in to 4x4 meaning that the 4x4 actuators are what is bad.
My dad said to get this replaced ASAP as if not fixed, it can round off the spine and the bearings may also need to be replaced. He also mentioned you may want to get both actuators / iwe's replaced even if one is only the problem.
Photo of the "vacuum solenoid" plug that I unplugged to diagnosis this is attached. Please plug this back in after you test it of course
Cheers,
John

I had the same problem for 6 months and finally found the heat shield on the driver side cat was rattling so I put a metal pipe clamp (the one with the hex head)

I have a brand new 5.4 Motor with around 12.5K in my 04 fx4 Screw. I use a Ford Oil filter and Valvoline 5-20. Changed religiously every 3K. After about 8K miles I notice this little rattle on acceleration. It hasn't gotten worse or better. I have not look under the truck yet or at the 4x4 actuator. I am all too familiar with the phaser/tension issues as it was the demise of the 1st motor. It blew up on me after buying it.
Anyway - I am really nervous about this now. I have a warranty on the motor - 3 years unlimited miles. So if it turns out that it IS a hydraulic tension allowing the chain to slap I need it fixed under warranty.
I really should just sell this truck for what I have in it since I'd break even and MOVE on.

Gahhhhhh stop reviving old threads, people...
Need better description of this "rattle," such as where you think it might be, and a recording would be even better. Preferably in a new thread so it's dedicated to YOU and this SPECIFIC problem.

I have a 2010 Ford F150 5.4 liter I just went underneath and check my heat shields they don't seem loose taking it to a mechanic next Friday to find out what the issue is I have the same problem online acceleration or wide open throttle for a little bit there is the rattling sound light but then goes away and may come back but does not stay on when I put my tuner on it is more noticeable and Loud under some conditions but truck drives excellent no check engine lights routine maintenance just had the plugs change 20,000 miles ago no issues other than that will keep everyone posted. On a side note it only does it when I am in drive it does not do it in neutral and does not do it in reverse
