I think I have the same noise. Have you been able to pin point it yet? I removed the heat shields on the cats but that did not help.

I cleaned the maf sensor. the truck runs better but I havent tried it on a hill yet. Its flat here in NJ. I dont think its a heat shield sounds like its in the motor. Like a pinging low octane. running lean maybe, but only going up a hill.

I also cleaned the MAF and throttle body but that did not help. I took one of my buddies for a ride today and he thinks it is a bad cat but I don't know how to tell if that is the problem or not.

My truck just started doing this as well. And its an 06 5.4 with 148k miles. Let us know what ya find out. Been thinking its either an.exhaust manifold leak or the low octane tick. Gonna see if putting some injector cleaner will help.

My truck had the same sort of rattling noise you described, I took it to my mechanic and he popped the hood and immediately found the problem. My engine mount bracket had cracked and was rattling he said its pretty common on the newer f150s so I just took off the bracket and no more noise

I had a miss in the motor, the 40-50 skip. After I changed the plugs the skip went away and this ping showed up. from what I read if you have the 40-50 skip its bad plugs and if you drive it like that for a while it will cause the cats to go bad. Now i wonder if I have a bad cat. would that cause the octane ping?

Are you sure its detonation(pinging)? Only reason I ask this is because I had a rattle noise only when my truck downshifted going up hills or if I got in it hard. Come to find out the driveside IWE actuator bladder was bad and loosing vacuum pressure so it was trying to engage the hub cause this horrible rattle sound. Your motor produces less vaccum the more you increase RPMs so the only time this happened was went the truck downshifted above 3500rpms. Just a thought. Good luck
