I have the same issue 05 lariat 5.4. Dealership says cam phasers and its will cost $2800 to fix. I have also been told in a thread I posted it could be timing chain tensioners. this seems to be a tough problem to diagnose. if anybody finds a resolution please let me know.

I have an 06, and get the same noise at almost every start up....Dont look to the oil filter as the culprit, its not. I am a parts guy and have been in the automotive field for years. With the technology and advancement of vehicles today 95% of oil filters on the market DO have an anti drain back valve. The only filters that dont are the cheapo off brand filters. anyways back to the topic at hand, using Lucas oil stabilizer may or may not solve the noise. I use Valvoline full syn, K&N filter and a qt of Lucas synthetic for every oil change and it "seems" the noise has quitened down a bit and isnt present at every start up. I have had no other issues so I guess I will just deal with it. If anyone does find the true answer, Im all EARS!!!

Yes. That is the stabalizer I use, but I do also use full syn oil. Lucas also offers a non-syn stabalizer that will mix with both conventional and full syn oils. Either one is just fine, lucas is a great product and when you see it in action it will make u a beleiver. I also have an 89 F-150 with a 4.9 in it and any of you who know the 4.9 know they are notorious for lifter rattle. I started running a full qt of lucas at every oil change and im here to tell you, you can barely here a sound at all from that engine and its knocking on 230,000 miles and still powers on.
