ratcheting noise while engaging 4wd, 2007
hello, was wondering if anybody knows what the problem is when a grinding/ticking noise is when egaging the 4wd. coming from the front end. driving slowly (10-20 mph). 4wd works but i'm afraid i'm gonna have issues.
any advice or info would be appreciated. thanks.

has something similar happen, but the grinding was when I was not in 4X4, when I put it in it went away. it was the wheel bearing. but it sounds like the 4X4 is not engaging in one of the automatic hubs or something like that.

Does it sound like its trying to crush ice in a blender? If so, that's a very common sign of trouble with the IWEs. Search here and other forums you'll find a lot about that. Mine were replaced by the dealer under extended warranty at no charge.
You should also check the IWE solenoid - to see if you have the old style that's open on top and can allow moisture into the vaccuum system. That can be a problem. Ford designed a replacement (same part with a small plastic cover on top to block moisture). cost about $20 and is a simple bolt on repair.
Again do some searching - lot's written about that too.

Here's a thread that just showed up on that solenoid - guy has one for sale, even if it's not the current porblem, if you have the old one you should change it. It's likely a pay me now or pay me later deal...
