Unhappy P0300 Random Misfire Mechanic wants Long Block

Originally, in October 2014, my 2006 Ford F150 King Ranch with a 5.4 Engine, started sounding like a diesel truck, as if the lifters were sounding. I took it to this former Ford mechanic, who had done tuneups and oil changes for me, and they proceeded to work on it (did the heads and timing chain).

When they gave it back to me, the next day, the check engine light went on, and they said that it jumped a tooth on the timing chain, so they fixed it.

When they gave it back to me, about a week later it started running rough, but now, when I started it cold, it made a loud noise, like Vroom!, which it wasn't doing before. They took it back changed the rest of the coils because some of them were new, and gave it back to me. Still had that rough start noise when I started it cold, and this time they sent to a friend of theirs who had 25 years at a Ford Dealership. He said one of the tensioners for the timing chain was broken and they replaced it.

Still had the rough start noise, and took it back. Their friend said it was running smoothly and couldn't see anything wrong with it. I picked it up and when I got off the freeway and came to a stop, the car started misfiring violently and the check engine light flashed on and off several times. About 80% of the time, it misfired when I came to a stop.

By this time I had bought a code reader, and when I checked it, it gave me code P0300, Random Misfiring. I took it back to their friend, he told my mechanic that it was the thrust sensor, and now he has suggested a Long Block replacement.

Now remember, the truck was running fine when I first took it to them in October, except for the clacking sound.
I don't know whether to believe them anymore, and I can't afford a new truck.

They are willing to credit me what they charged me to begin with, and just to pay them the difference between the long block and that.
I don't know if I should go for it.

Can anyone here give me any ideas as to whether they are right or can I try something else?
