Rack and Pinion Seal is gone help
Had my truck in the shop on Friday and had a 4WD actuator installed for around $45. When picked it up at the shop it was dripping power steering fluid and I didn't think much of it until I got home and the power steering fluid was completely gone about 3 hours later. I looked under the truck and it was pissing out PSF from the pinion seal where the steering wheel pinion goes into the steering rack. The mechanic at the shop who worked on my truck is a close family friend and he said he blew the seal. Does anyone know if this can be fixed? Or will I have to get a new steering rack? I just put $600.00 into the truck last week (new wheel bearing, cv axle, 2 new 4wd actuators) so I don't want to spend a lot more money. Right now I have a $15,000 lawn ornament that eats a bottle of power steering fluid every 4 hours.

Racks can be re-built, but if your friend said he blew it...they should fix it.

No I will NOT be paying for it...I just wasn't sure if it came down to simply replacing the seal where the lower steering shaft goes into the column...or If i'll need an entirely new rack....I'll be finding out today

How did he blow the seal?

He was installing a 4WD actuator and disconnected the upper ball joint on the drivers side...then turn the steering knuckle without the truck being on....so I believe that how the seal got blown.
