Everytime I have had to remove mine (damn window regulators) I have been able to reattach the plastic using the black caulking/glue/whatever the hell it is... I have an 04 and it has stayed pretty tacky even being 6 years old...

I have torn mine off probably 5 times and just pressed the original stuff back on the door and it holds.

It stays flexible and tacky enough to re-attach to the plastic.

Get some Silicone II (used for windows and is mold resistant) if it is a worry. I haven't come across the old stuff not working, but I haven't dealt with it being more than a couple years old.
