Question for anyone with HID's
#11
On a side note, I just want to express my opinion on HID's once on this forum...I have been in countless arguments about this on my lighting forum (Oznium) with tons of people backing me up...It usually gets heated lol...
Please don't use HID's in the stock halogen headlight housings, it's not only highly illegal but it seriously impairs everyone's vision around you due to the glare of the bright bulb reflecting everywhere off of the headlight designed for halogen bulbs...at least retrofit some projectors for a proper cut off line to not blind oncoming traffic.
Or, if you can find a set of headlights with HID projector's, not projectors made for halogen bulbs.
Aiming the housing down as far as you can is not a suitable fix for HID glare.
But I'm not anyone's father here...and you all know you can do what you want and not listen to me at all.
That's all.

AJRogers,
I value your opinion and understand what you are saying however I'm only looking into this option because I have tried silverstars and PIAA and none provide the lighting I feel that is safe for me at night and yes my head light casing are clear and adjusted properly. Also on another note cars that are standard with HID from factory give me the same blind brightness when coming towards me that any aftermarket HID kit
That's only my 2cents.

Thanks for the info AJ. Im definetly not goin to spend another $200 for headlights. I think theyre bright enough now to where i dont really need high beams (although theyd be nice to have). I havent had anyone yet flash me cuz theyre too bright. If i get a lot of people doing it then i'll look into a new housing. As for the legal part of it, i dont really care. Everything else is illegal on the truck. Its registered in MD but i live in NC so I cant get an inspection down here. And not that im doubting you, but where did you hear that it was illegal. Ive never heard that one before.

I've known quite a few businesses that have had to stop selling them per legal action taken by the state they were in.
If an HID is aftermarket, or is not in a DOT approved HID projector housing it's illegal in all states.
Here is a letter to the owner of of a business that had to stop selling HID's from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
http://nhthqnwws112.odi.nhtsa.dot.go...8E023-4157.pdf
They specifically mention "excessive glare" and the business owner had to recall all units he had sold. He didn't get to sell them long before they cracked down on him.
As long as you're courteous to the drivers around you then go for it, and it sounds like you are so that's awesome.
I just hate being blinded by the 15 year old ricer civic boy behind me with ebay HID's (I'm not saying anyone here is one of those people)

AJ, that letter doesnt say one word about the type of housing used. It just says HID's cause excessive glare and theyre recalling the ones Oznium sold. Thats it. So where did the headlight housing issue come into play?

It is not any particular housing, it is the parts themselves. These parts are "upgrades" to halogen housings, hence the reason for selling them. Nobody with factory HID's will buy these kits due to no need for them. The housings themselves are not meant to dispurse such a high amount of light even though the wattage is actually lower.

There is a real way this can be done with 10x better results that I am working in a few sets now.
Go on ebay and buy a cheap set of projector lights. Most of those projector housings will have a 1.5" dia lens. Proceed to purchase a set of Acura TSX or Honda S2000 projectors. To fit these into these housings is not difficult, but can be a little time consuming. I have done this before and for the extra $150-200 it is well worth knowing that your lights are legal since you are retrofitting in DOT approved parts. NTM the end result is amazing.
