Default question about the four wheel drive light

when i put my truck in 4wd, does the light come on because the switch (its electric) is in the 4wd position, or does the light come on when its actually in 4wd?

then when going from 4wd to 2wd, does the light go off, when i move the switch or does it go off when its actually in 2wd?

meaning as long as the light is off its safe to turn on concrete and i wont have binding because its in 2wd.

07 lariat vacuum operated 4wd

I believe the light goes on or off with the solenoid. So it would be possible to have some binding going on that doesnt release the front wheels right when the light goes off.

The indicator lights are controlled by the pcm, which also controls the t-case and iwe solenoids.

I just replaced my vacuum solenoid because the light wasn't coming on. The transfer case wasn't engaged when the switch was in 2HI but I had no vacuum going to the wheels to keep them dis-engaged so the wheels & axels were engaged even though the transfer case wasn't.

As long as everything is working correctly, the light is based off of the t-case and the IWE.

If something is not working, the light would either flash or not turn on.

no my light comes on, and 4wd works, it binds up. im just trying to see if im safe to crank it to full lock as soon as that 4hi light goes off. im not saying i will. but lets say i was. i put the switch in 2wd, then the light goes off and i crank the wheel on concrete. is it gonna bind up on me?

i guess to try to explain the question more, is my friends 4 runner, when he puts it in 2wd, he can turn as soon as the light goes off, and the 4wd light will stay on until it comes out of 4 wheel drive. and vice versa, it wont come on until its truly in 4wd when he goes from 2 to 4.

i cant decide if my truck just goes into and out of 4wd and 2 wheel drive that fast or if the light just does what the switch does.

my jeep, the light came on when i put the lever in the 4wd position and came off as soon as i took it out, but i had to listen for the clunk to see if it was in or out.
