Default purchased an 07. no pics yet. questions on 35s and trans life.

so i just signed the paperwork on an 07. no deetails yet since i have no pictures of it, its sitting at the dealer with a sold sign in the window. when i get it ill post an intro thread and pictures. i know pics or it didnt happen.

i really want to do a 2.5 level in the front, then if the back is lower either do an aal or a 3 inch rear block to replace the stock 2 inch block. that gives me plenty of room for 35s, but ive been reading allot on the 35s make it search for gears, 35s make your trans wear out faster, ect.

now i plan on occasionally pulling my mustang. and i go to school in the mountains, long highway drives through the mountains.

truck has 3.73 gears with the limited slip rear (axle code is b6). in order to save my trans and be able to drive through mountains on 35s would i need to regear to a 4.10 atleast? 33's look too small for me. i was also thinking about getting a tire size inbetween 33 and 35 ( the metric equivalant) that way they would be not as big as 35's.

i think they are going to be bfg at's. i dont have the need for mud tires but maybe once every 3 or 4 months, and for that its not worth them wearing down. i plan on doing a muffler and gotts mod to start. maybe a gryphoon later down the road, but its a plus being able to run 87 in it. questions comments concerns?

thanks for the help

It is defiantly harder on the transmission with the larger tires. Regearing will defiantly help, on the highway you will just run at a higher RPM.

3.73s will work through the mountains as long as you aren't towing anything. Definitely step up to the 4.10s if you have an doubt. Get the Edge/Gryphon as soon as possible, that will help your tranny.

so if i do an edge or gryphoon i can still run an 87 octane tune and get better performance? i wont be pulling through the mountains but maybe twice a year, other than that i will be just driving it through them. so 35s and 3.73's arent that bad? and it wont hurt the life expectancy of my trans?

Yes, here is their homepage http://gopowerhungry.com/index.html
You'll lose some city mpg if you stick with 3.73, for a dd that you're not racing or crawling with, 4.10s will work.

I also have an 07 with 35's and had 3.73 gears. When I got the edge, I had problem running 87 octane when it was cold, so I moved up to 89 and the problem went away, but it is back again, so I think I narrowed it down to a dirty air filter... check out my post titled really really frustrated. As for the 35's fitting with the leveling kit, you will probably have to do some trimming so you don't get any rubbing. With my 8 inch lift, 35's barely clear the plastic liner under the bumper, so you will have to cut that for sure. Concerning the gears, I went with 4.56's, so if you don't do a lot of highway driving, I would highly reccomend that. I don't think you'll get much of a difference from 3.73's to 4.10's. Also, I can't remember for sure, but if it is 4x4, I don't think they make 4.10s for the front end. (honestly can't remember...) I've had the 4.56s for about three weeks, and after breaking them in for 500 miles, I love the difference I feel. A lot of power return to the truck. Here's a picture of my front tires at full turn with an 8 inch lift, so you get an idea of the clearance.

have you noticed a difference in mpg much? Not that it matters when you have an 8" lift and 35s, but just curious

It really didn't change a whole lot with the lift and 35's but after getting the new gears and having the egde, it's doing better than it seems like it ever has. I lose a little when going over 70, but I don't highway travel that much, so for the most part, I love the new gears and the tuner.

It should depend on your backspacing, lovemystx4x4 has wheels with less backspacing than stock, so they stick out and get close the the valence. A lot of people run 35x12.50s on stock rims with a leveling kit with just minor rubbing on the UCAs.

I'm debating on tires right now as well, and have been thinking about 295/70r18 (34.25x11.6) or 305/70R18 (34.81x12.00).
