Default Programmers

I'm thinking about doing my first mod and getting a programmer (I have the 5.4L Flex Fuel) and from doing research it appears that Gryphon and Edge are the 2 best options. It seems that the Gryphon is better for modded trucks though. So my question is what type of mods are we talking about? I'm only looking to do a cold air intake and exhaust. Would the Gryphon or Edge be best for me?

Also, what's the deal with setting tunes? It seems that for the Gryphon you have to pay $50 per tune. How does it work on the Edge? THanks.

The Xcal III or Livewire with custom tuning either from Troyer Performance or VMP. I have both Troyer custom and VMP custom tunes and I like the feel of the Troyer tunes better. I am having Justin make some changes to the VMP tunes though to adjust the TC issue so that may make a difference. Both tunes have the issue (around 40-45 mph the torque converter locks and the truck seems to bog down) but it seems the VMP tunes (as written) bog down a lot more than the Troyer tunes. That may be something you may want to talk to Mike (Troyer Performance) or Justin (VMP) about if you have either of those guys set up your tunes for you.

wow, I'm suprised to hear such bad review on the Edge/Gryphon. I will look into the tuners you mentioned. How do the custom tunes work? Would I have to get a tune after I put an exhaust on and then another when I put a cold air intake on?

Personally I'd wait until you get your CAI and exhaust because if you go with Troyer you'll have to fill out some spec sheets about your truck and included are specifics about your CAI and exhaust. That way your tunes can be custom built to your exact mods.
