Default Power steering maintnance

I just wanted to let every one know about my experience with changing the Mercon V power steering fluid.....My steering was getting a bit noisy (whining sound at low speed turns) and didn't feel as smooth as i thought it should....So.....I bought some mercon V and a fluid transfer tool (looks like a turkey baster) and I sucked out the old fluid and dumped in the new.......Then I turned the wheel a couple times and the whining noise went away!!!! I may run the truck for another week and repeat the process, but I just wanted to remind every one how easy it is, and it will improve the life of your steering components...Also it only cost 5.50 for the fluid and 2-3 for the turkey baster

....and be very careful not to contaminate the fluid in the reservoir!

I had to change my PS cooler that is located under truck mounted front of sub frame . It has two rubber hoses with sping clips easy to unhook let gravity due it job , also a great time to take off cooler just two 8 or 10 mm bolts and flush out & clean unit ,rehook up fill and start truck retop and move streering wheel up & down let air work out of line and you will be good to go .took me about 1/2 hr .

How did you know that you needed to change the PS cooler, and what did you use to flush it...also, do you know what the total capacity is for the PS system (my parts store was out of the Haynes repair manual).

Well mine was almost flat ,it was amazing that it held pressure . I pick up 2 qts mercon v I think it held about 1 qt . And I flushed the used one out with parts cleaner at work ( glorified mineral spirits) then blew it out with air real well then I poured mercon v in it let swish around then dump it out did that twice to make sure no cleaner was left .

Yes, but how did you know you needed to flush the cooler?

Yesterday morning, the hose popped off my cooler and dumped fluid all over the driveway. I shortened the hose to reattache to the cooler and reclamp, but the hose is pretty soft. So I ordered a new one... a bit surprising with one 30K on the truck (2004 F150)
Anyone else ever heard of this happening?
