Well over the weekend I just happened to break the front drive shaft for four wheel drive. Until the part gets here I have been driving in 2H

Now on my same path I take every day to and from work I always get about 13.8 mpg. However I reset the counter today to see what it was with the front drive shaft off.

To my surprise I was getting 17.8 mpg over a 26 mile span of combination city / highway driving. This is the same path I take when before I was only getting 13.8 mpg

Can anyone else confirm this?

Are you saying before your axle broke you always had the truck in 4x4 ? If so yeah your mileage will be way better in 2wd.

No, I am saying that in normal drive without using 4 wheel drive I would get 13.8 mpg. Now in the same driving mode with out the front drive shaft attached I am getting 4 mpg more then normal. Axel did not break it was the front drive shaft that is used when in 4 wheel drive.

Ok you should check that your cv shafts arent spinning when in 2 wd could be something wrong with your 4x4 system and now that the aaxle is removed you got less drag on the truck.

nothing wrong with the system, it switches fine. I just need a new front drive shaft because it broke over the weekend when I was pulling some small tree roots out of the ground. I had it in 4 low to do the pulling and that is when front drive shaft twisted in half.



Now that this drive shaft is out I am getting 4 more MPG in regular driving mode.

yea but the point is your front drive shaft should have no effect on MPG's unless something is wrong with your 4x4. If your 4x4 works the way it should then your wheel ends should be disconnected and they should not be turning your driveshaft and if your switch is in 2H then your transfer case should not be turning your driveshaft. so if all is working properly your driveshaft should never spin in 2H under normal conditions, thus not effecting MPG's. so something is not right.
