Sounds like my truck but louder. Nothing but theory here but I wonder if VCT Solenoid malfunction eventually beats the cam phasers to death? Seems as if the VCT is limiting oil flow causing the phaser pin to slap the area that would be cushioned by the oil thats not filling up the chamber?

I replaced one side... Noise on that side is gone. Phaser knock is nothing more then this freaking sensor. Dealership wanted 1100 a side for the phaser replacement. The phasers are fine. I've never even heard of but a very select few people whom have had their trucks timing chain brake or come off because of phasers... and those were the people who went to the dealership. This is a lesson right along with the rest of the freaking bs they come up with. Leave the stealerships alone. They have no idea what they are talking about... and generally will fix everything but what the issue is, or make up a lie to make more money. Such BS.

That is exactly how my truck sounds. So the fix was the VCT Solenoid?

Yep stealership tried the same!
Had a leaking rear dif. Covered under warranty 100 deductible
Showed up - slapped a 600 labor bill !! Huh? Why? Said they had to go deeper in rear end make sure nothing else broke. Nada broke, so why they charging for nada broke. Labor! I might be a chic but not stupid
Walked out owing 134 and free oil change
Oh and my baby is running beautifully!
Thanks to this Forum and all who gave me advise! I went in educated!!

Gillespie, that is exactly how my 2004 sounds. If you get under the truck while it is running does the sound almost sound like it is coming from the pan? The dealership told me they thought it was in the lowerend and after listening I kind of agreed. Then I talked to a guy that said the sound can echo through the engine and if it was something in the lower end my engine would have stopped a long time ago. The key thing with my engine is it sounds fine cold and only makes the noise when it gets warmed up. I would think if it was anything other than the phasers, especially lower end, it would sound the same cold or warm. Any mechanics opinions on this would be appreciated. Gillespie, let us know what your repair results are.

These trucks do this. Is it not a phaser tapping... Its that stupid sensor... They tried to tell me it was gonna cost be 300 bucks to change out my dash cluster... I found out on here the back light was replaceable. Did it in 10 minutes in my drive way. They wanted to replace my window switch. Said they were completely burnt up. Came here, found out you can clean the contacts. Took me 30 mins and most of that was just getting the plastic cover off..

I actually called Ford today. Talked to someone who wasn't trying to take my money, and he told me the VCT was the issue as well. Said that TSB only effects a very limited number of vehicles. Also part of that 1100 dollars is a new VCT sensor. While they have it apart most dealerships replace that. Getting rid of the noise, so people assume that the phasers were shot, and needed to be replaced. He said its just really a lack of information from the dealerships, but told me not to spend 1100 bucks on each side, and instead just replace those sensors. He even went on to apologize for my inconvenience. The guy really seemed to know what he was talking about though. At first I was just gonna curse them for the bs, but this guy was technical when it came to that 5.4L...

Well installed the vct sensors this.morning. the seals on them are definatly a SOB but.with a little.care try can be reused. But after letting the engine run for a little.bit to recirculare the oil.the tick is.100% completely gone. No more ticking at all. Thank you all on his forum and especially this thread. Totally worth doing a sticky for this thread.
