I got it towed to the Ford Dealership and they are telling me that I need a new engine ($6500) bc of a sludge problem. I know that yours was just idling rough but I'm hoping that this is the same case where the VCT solenoids needs to be changed. I'm going to pick it up from the dealership today to get a second opinion but they didn't give me a huge explanation to what was wrong other than it has a sludge problem. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pictures or get the codes it was shooting. I've always changed my oil regularly at 3k miles and I did mostly highway driving so I'm a little confused to why the engine would go out at 103k miles. Congrats on getting the $2200 back from the dealership by the way. Hope my luck is as good as yours.

Get a second opinion ask what the codes were and did they ever even open it up?

Glad to hear you got your money refunded but I have a question regarding all of that sludge. Do you regularly change your oil? And what oil filter do you use? That was quite a bit of sludge and I am curious as to why...

thanks!

Default vct

I just had the the same trouble with my truck. The dealer told me I had a bent crank shaft . I told him he was full of sh@# and he said he had to stand behind his tec. I came on here and did some researcher toke it to a local guy and he cleaned out the vct and it ran great. I also had him change the spark plugs because I seen what a pain it was .70,000 miles on it now and hope to get another 70,000 The dealer said they were sorry and gave me my $80 back I think they were sorry I didn't fall for the $6500 fix.

So... Did this actually solve the ticking sound that was originally thought to be the phasers? I have heard this from a few friends who work at Ford stealerships... If that really did fix the knocking/ticking then you may REALLY be on to something. PM me or whatever, let me know.

Think about it! How many times have I read that someone on here has paid the painful $2K+ for the phaser replacement, and they STILL tick... If this was one instance where the tick was thought to be a phaser, but wasn't quite as loud then this could actually be the culprit.

yeah... for as cheap as this is... someone who has ticking should try it out and let us all know! seams like a fairly easy replacement... what is the actual part cost at the dealership and does anyone know what size torx is used for the bolt that goes in the solenoid?

Okay... I ordered the parts from Ford and I will be replacing mine either tonight or tomorrow morning. I will take pictures of the swap and will follow up with video showing the before and after noise (tick) then we can see if there really is a difference.

I will let you all know ASAP!

hey there my truck hasn't thrown a check engine light either but it's running just like yours. its a 2006 ford f 150 xlt with the 5.4 and it idles a little rough and makes a lash sound at about 1200RPM. my question is do these trucks throw a check engine light when the vct is running bad? It's either the vct or the spark plug and boots and or coil. Shop suggests plugs and boots causing spark to arc to cylinder wall when at full throttle. Truck has 55000 I've called around and some shops say its too early for the plugs. maybe getting them done early will help get them out easier.

No, the truck won't throw a CEL if that solenoid is bad. It may throw a code that is related to it going bad, but it will not directly indicate that as the issue.

Ok. So this could be my issue then. I really haven't heard anything about the spark plugs arcing to the wall on here. can the solenoid be cleaned or should it just be replaced?
