A pleasant surprise (fuel mileage)
#1
I recently installed an efan, partly to help my fuel mileage. 2005 Lariat SCrew 4x4, 5.5' bed and 3.73 open diff. I had to take a trip to the Chicago suburbs, so this would be a good overall test. I ran Rt 47 north, mostly highway with some city and construction, all of it into a moderate headwind. The trip computer reported 18.2 MPG on the highway (60MPH average) and that dropped to 17.6 after I got into the suburbs.
I skirted Chicago on the way home, some stop and go rush hour traffic, some construction, 70MPH average, overall the computer stayed at 17.6 MPG for the whole trip. I had strong crosswinds out of the west on the way home.
Now for the surprise. The computer said 17.6 MPG over the 317 mile trip. However, with 17.237 gallons used, that's about 18.4 MPG. Considering the wind, construction, and traffic, I'd say that's pretty damned good for a truck that's supposed to get 17MPG highway. This was also on 10% ethanol gas, which hurts mileage.
I knew the computer wouldn't be exactly accurate, but it was a nice surprise to find the real mileage was that much better than reported. It's likely I was getting 19 or better on the 60 MPH stretches. That's pretty good considering my 800 lb motorcycle with an 1800 cc engine averages 36MPG combined...

Had two of the kids with me and not much else. I'm fairly sure that had it not been for the rush hour stop and go in Chicago, I could have hit 19 MPG average. No A/C usage as it was fairly cool. Had the sunroof and driver window open most of the way. Without the wind and traffic slow downs, I might have seen 20 MPG...
